Main Street Marketplace
The City Center Partnership presents the fall Main Street Marketplace, kicking off this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Boyd Plaza. The open-air market features fresh produce; baked goods; specialty gifts; art; photography; books; and handmade crafts. There is no charge for admission. Boyd Plaza is located in front of the Columbia Museum of Art at the corner of Main and Hampton Streets.

Get Cocky

At the University of South Carolina, athletics have played an evolving role in student life. Get Cocky: Students and Athletics at the University of South Carolina at McKissick Museum looks at the changing role of athletics at the university. It highlight how students have supported sports and how they may or may not have benefited from the change. The exhibit will be on display through Dec. 18. The museum is open Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Cruising the lake

The Spirit of Lake Murray is hosting an end-of-
summer party this Saturday to celebrate the Labor Day weekend. For $39.50 per person, enjoy a sunset cruise on the lake and snack on Mediterranean- and Caribbean-style hors d'oeuvres. Cruise boards at 6:30 p.m. and cruises from 7-9:30 p.m. Call 843-730-3044 or go online.

Go Gamecocks

Tonight, the South Carolina Gamecocks will take the field at Williams Brice Stadium in a matchup against the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles. Watch heralded recruit Marcus Lattimore in his first game, and witness the stifling Gamecock defense make plays in the 2010 home debut. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. Purchase tickets online or visit the ticket office before the game.

Saturday sail

Enjoy a two-hour sailing sample this weekend with Lanier Sailing Academy of Lake Murray. Try your hand at sailing or just sit back and let the captain guide the boat. The tour leaves the Southshore Marina dock at 9:30 a.m., noon, 2:30 p.m., and 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday of Labor Day Weekend. Registration is $25. Call 803-317-9070 to reserve your spot.

Downtown festival

The "Let Freedom Ring" Labor Day festival runs from Saturday through Monday in historic downtown Chapin. On Saturday, enjoy a 5K walk or run while celebrating Firefighter Appreciation Day. On Sunday, take it easy at an afternoon picnic at Lake Murray Presbyterian Church. All this is then followed by a parade and more festivities on Monday.

Farewell Summer

Come out to the Village at Sandhill on Friday from 7-9 p.m. for the last performance of this year's summer concert series as the Black Bottom Biscuits take the stage. As always, there is no charge for admission. All you need is a lawn chair or blanket.

Playing with fire

Head to the Nickelodeon Theatre to catch the second film in Stieg Larsson's murder mystery trilogy. Following on the success of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, disaster strikes in The Girl Who Played with Fire when publisher Mikael Blomkvist launches a scandalous expose. Two of his staffers show up dead, and the police are in pursuit of Lisbeth Salander, who vanishes. Blomkvist, meanwhile, is thinking conspiracy. Showtimes are throughout the weekend.

Museum-hopping

If you have a Bank of America card, you can check in at EdVenture on Saturday and Sunday for no charge. Museums on Us gives cardholders admission to more than 70 museums nationwide, and EdVenture is the only S.C. museum chosen to participate. While you're out, head to the Columbia Museum of Art on Sunday afternoon for a complimentary 45-minute interactive tour courtesy of BlueCross BlueShield of SC. Explore the world of art in a way that can be enjoyed by all family members and learn how to talk about art with your children. Tour begins at 1 p.m.

Be proud

The SC Pride 2010 Parade takes place down Main Street and is followed by a festival in Finlay Park on Saturday. The LGBT festival features live performances by Taylor Dayne, Janice Robinson, Pandora Boxx, Danielle Howle, Cris Williams and more. The parade is open to all and there is no charge for admission.

Humane Society dine-out night: Monday 6-9 p.m. at Momo's Bistro. Print this card, give it to your server, and 10% of the proceeds goes to the Humane Society.

Greek festival: Sept. 16-19 at the corner of Sumter and Calhoun streets. Enjoy Columbia's 24th annual edition of the dining, dancing and cultural event.

Columbia Blues Festival: Oct. 1-2. The 16th annual festival will be held at Martin Luther King Jr. Park in Five Points. The event begins at noon each day.

Third annual Italian Festival: 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Oct. 2.
