The statewide jobless rate was 10.5%, with the Charleston, Columbia and Greenville metro areas hovering around 8.5%. Some 3,599 people found jobs in January, according to the S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce’s monthly report. Foreclosure filings were down across the nation and state for February, according to data from a national foreclosure tracking company. RealtyTrac says that while the numbers will likely not hit the peak of March 2010, the industry is still resetting from problems with processing distressed properties. |

Aiming to generate more interest in the sciences among secondary school students, the S.C. Governor's School for Science and Mathematics launched a grass-roots campaign Wednesday to build awareness, energy and momentum around the study of science, technology, engineering and math. The state’s flagship university has constructed three buildings that meet the standards for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, comprising 517,983 square feet, according to the University of South Carolina’s director of sustainability. |

Recycling industry and conservation leaders are promoting a new recycling bill for the alcoholic beverage industry. The University of South Carolina institute is helping to launch East Point Academy, South Carolina’s first Chinese immersion charter school. The academy, located on Knox Abbott Drive in Cayce, will open in August. |
