Darla Moore announces to a gathering of USC students and administrators on the Columbia campus this afternoon that she’s giving $5 million to the university to establish an aerospace research center. Moore, a native of Lake City, said she wants the center named in honor of the late Ron McNair, also a Lake City native, who died in the space shuttle Challenger explosion. Columbia remained the state’s largest city, with a population of 129,272 — an increase of 11.2% since 2000, according to redistricting data released Wednesday by the U.S. Census Bureau.
