Memorial service planned for heroes, victims of terrorism – Community leaders plan a 9-11 memorial service on September 11. Heroes and victims of the 2001 terrorist attacks will be honored at the service at the Riverwalk Amphitheater just south of the Gervais Street Bridge in West Columbia. The service will focus on fundraising but those attending will have an opportunity to make donations to public safety groups in Cayce, Springdale, West Columbia and Lexington County to help with first-responders’ needs. A concert of patriotic and spiritual music will begin at 7:30a.m. with the service at 8:30. A bell will toll the minutes of the attacks in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania at 8:46, 9:03, 9:37 and 10:06 with a minute of silence to follow. The service will feature speakers familiar with the terror attacks and recovery and those who served in the War on Terror that followed. During the service, those attending will be able to sing patriotic songs with a special community choir. Anyone who wants to volunteer to work on this service or to sing in this special choir should contact Pastor Michael Henderson at Cayce United Methodist Church, 794-3200. The service is being planned by Lexington School District 2, the West Metro Rotary Club and the West Metro Chamber of Commerce.
