South Carolina’s Matthews may be ready for Omaha –
Last season, Adam Matthews was a key role player that helped lead South Carolina to a national championship. Matthews may be ready to take that role again this season as the Gamecocks prepare for a second straight trip to Omaha. “I was thinking of hitting (Matthews) against UCONN left-hander Greg Nappo in Game Two,” USC head coach Ray Tanner said. “He’s missed 25 games which equals 100 at-bats. He’s just not ready for live pitching.: Matthews, who was drafted in the 23rd round by the Baltimore Orioles, could be used as a designated hitter as the Gamecocks play for another national title. Matthews has been dealing with a hamstring injury since the Florida series in March. He made DH appearances in the series against Tennessee and Vanderbilt. Matthews made an appearance in the regional round against Georgia Southern but went 0 for 3 with two strikeouts.

Lexington County turns tax screws –
Taxes are going up in Lexington County despite a last ditch effort by citizens to stop a tax increase. Lexington County Council approved a $102 million budget for 2011-12 which will raise taxes $9.31 on homes valued at $100,000. Few people attended the May 24 public hearing on the new budget. But Tuesday’s final vote was attended by a large crowd of citizens identifying themselves as StopTaxes.org, sporting yellow stickers saying, “No new taxes.” “Where were all of these people during the public hearing, when choices were being made, Councilman Bobby Keisler, asked. Keisler and Frank Townsend said deciding how to vote was a difficult decision this year. Neither supported the new budget. People need a lot of things, but they cost money, and I will keep my promise not to raise taxes.” Townsend said to applause.
