Amazon to mean $1.7 billion to state – Incentives will cost $61 million over the next ten years, analysis estimates. State officials expect Amazon to produce more than $1.7 billion in taxes over the next 10 years. In comparison, a cost-benefit analysis projects that bringing the internet retail giant to Lexington County will cost the state almost $61 million over 10 years – about $21.5 million more than first estimated. That’s a projected tax gain for state and local services of $1.64 billion. The revised Commerce Dept. analysis includes an estimated $128.8 million in state revenues. Much of that is based on a payroll of 2,509 projected indirect jobs from companies doing business with Amazon, reports The Nerve, an online newsletter of the conservative S.C. Policy Council. Indirect income is estimated with a payroll multiplier of $2 for every $1 Amazon contributes.

9-11 Memorial – Soldiers, first responders and Midlands children broke ground for the S.C. “First Responders Remembrance Memorial” at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center on Monday morning. The memorial honors all those who perished on September 11, 2001 and all Midlands first responders who gave their lives in the line of duty since. The memorial features two granite towers and two steel beams from the World Trade Center that Dan Hennigan and Irmo Fire Chief Mike Sonefeld brought back from New York City. The memorial is set to be dedicated for the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2011.
