Gibson Pond Park Improvements Continue - Work is under way on improvements to the dam at Gibson Pond Park in Lexington. The town is repairing the decking across the dam bridge, and adding handrails and benches, town parks, streets and sanitation. The improvements to the bridge will make it safer to walk and sit on. Ashpalt will also be replaced on either end of the dam bridge. And some bollards or barricades will be put up on the bridge to keep people from diving over the dam. The changes are being funded by the Lexington Sertoma Club, which has raised more than $15,000 from its Big Thursday activities for park improvements. Funds donated last year paid for a scenic overlook at the pond park. The club plans a third event in October.

Bi-Lo Assists West Columbia Community - Bi-lo of West Columbia recently donated two truckloads of food and school supplies to the West Columbia Police Department. The food will be distributed through the Police Department's food pantry and the school supplies will be given to needy children in the community prior to the beginning of the 2011-2012 school year. Sgt. John Norman, who oversees the West Columbia Police Department's Community Action Team, said, "Bi-lo has been such an outstanding community partner. Their generosity allows us to help so many people in our area who are in need. We look forward to a continued relationship with them."

Free Medical Event Coming to the Carolina Colisuem in Columbia - Adults who do not have access to health care services can receive free medical, eye and dental care August 5 and 6 at the Carolina Coliseum in Columbia. Working together, licensed health practitioners will provide dental, medical and eye care services to undeserved or uninsured adults on a first-come, first-serve basis. Sponsors expect more than 1,000 volunteers including physicians, nurses, dentists, optometrists, pharmacy and lab specialists, medical and nursing students and lay persons to participate in the two-day event. Some volunteers will also assist with patient registration and records. While providers will see as many persons as possible, organizers expect the demand to exceed capacity. This event is planned specifically for adults because services and coverage for children are more readily available in the community. Interpretors and clinical volunteers are still needed and anyone interested should go to www.uway.org/volunteer to register.
