More Sidewalks Coming to Lexington - New sidewalks will make Lexington more accessible to foot traffic. A new project is set to begin on George Street that will link that area to Gibson Road and West Main Street. It's part of a plan to tie sidewalks together so more residents can walk to more places around downtown Lexington, town parks, streets and sanitation. The two-block George Street project will ad to the mobility of citizens who live in or use the area for walking. The town received an $86,477 Community Development Block grant to pay for the project. Work is set to being within the next few years. The contractor, AOS Specialty, has 120 days to complete the sidewalks.

Agape Food Drive - Agape Senior is collecting food for the needy. The senior health care provider is accepting donations in Irmo at 990 Columbia Ave., in Lexington at 5422 Augusta Road and in West Columbia at 2705 Leaphart Road. Needed items include canned meats and vegetables, pop-top cans, peanut butter, kids' snacks, cereal, dry goods, toiletries and diapers.

Beating the Heat in South Carolina - The head is on in South Carolina! The main topic of conversation is the swelterig heat oppresive humidity. With consecutive days of above 95 degrees and many reaching the triple digits, everyone is looking for ways to keep cool. The National Weather Service advises everyone to slow down, dress for summer, drink plenty of water, avoid caffinated and alcoholic beverages, stay in air conditioned places as much as possible and stay out of the sun. Since the heat dome affects most of the nation, many cities have set up shelters to provide a cool place for residents or homeless to get relief. This is the perfect time to sip a refreshing cool lemonade, try an icee, savor your favorite ice cream flavor and enjoy decaffinated sweet iced tea. Also, a swim in the pool or a trip to the splash pool in local parks will provide temporary relief.
