Another on county council joins economic development ranks – Lexington wants its chance at greatness in regional development. So it is piggy-backing on a community development program introduced in Columbia four years ago. The Good to Great initiative was set up to improve regional development. That initiative is being expanded to Lexington County and maybe even the entire Midlands region, leaders say. Bill Banning has been hired as manager for regional development in Lexington County, said Lexington Mayor Randy Halfacre. Halfacre and Banning, a Lexington County Council Member, will work with governments and businesses on ways to move the Lexington area ahead in development. “We want to find out what it would take to move the Lexington area to the next level,” he said. Banning will look at the same major areas as Columbia including transportation, environment, quality of life, economic development and intergovernmental cooperation. If the project succeeds, it will be expanded to include the 11 county area covered by the Mid-State Chambers Coalition, Halfacre said. Banning said that could mean better cooperation here in the Midlands. Banning said local chambers, counties, cities and delegations need to work closer together to be successful.

Four week old giraffe calf now on exhibit at Riverbanks Zoo – Riverbanks Zoo and Garden is pleased to announce its newest arrival – a giraffe calf, born at the Zoo on July 11. The now four week old giraffe weighed 105 lbs. and stood 5 feet tall at birth and is the second born to parents Charlie and Ginger. “We are very excited about this latest addition to our giraffe herd,” said John Davis, curator of mammals. “The calf is doing very well and growing at a steady pace, but he won’t be full grown until about 5 years old.” Adult giraffes can reach heights of up to 18 feet tall (record is 20’ tall) and can weigh as much as 2,600 pounds.

The power of prayer to realize a dream – Community leader finds solution to abandoned children’s plight It all started in prayer. Philanthropist and community leader Ted McGee was concerned about the growing number of homeless, abused and neglected children in Lexington County. In prayer, the answer came to him. Build a children’s home that would be for youngsters, without a home, some of them disabled at birth due to the addictions of their mothers. “God put in into my head,” McGee said. How am I going to do this? He asked. Won’t that take a lot of money? The answer was, start a Book of Love in which the names of those who give of their time or money can be entered. ‘It’s amazing how many homeless children there are, and I want to give them home.” The property they are negotiating to buy is 15 acres near Gibson Road. It has two stately brick homes, one for the boys and one for the girls, and a large three car garage that could become an educational and recreational center for the home. The home will be named the Chris Myers Children’s Place after the late son of 11th Circuit Solicitor Donnie Myers and will be operated by Jimmy Jones of Christ Central Ministries.
