About Aiken County, SC

Aiken County, SC lies along the border of Georgia and has been named "One of a Dozen Distinctive Destinations." It offers picturesque gardens, friendly towns, thoroughbred horses, and unique historical museums. Residents and visitors alike enjoy the famous equestrian events, such as the Aiken Triple Crown and the Aiken Steeplechase, and golfers can play as long as they want on the more than ten pristine golf courses here.

Like so many U.S. towns, Aiken was "born out of the railroads," and was named after William Aiken, the president of the SC Railroad and Canal Company. Aiken County was created out of parts of Edgewood, Lexington, Barnwell, and Orangeburg counties. The Town of Aiken was established as a depot and it didn't take long for wealthy winter visitors to recognize its beauty and charm and to claim it as one of their favorite winter resorts.

Aiken is a perfect place for businesses to flourish. Its central location, railroad system, and close proximity to Interstate 20 allows businesses easy access to major cities, including Atlanta, Charlotte, Charleston, Columbia, and Savannah. Aiken is also the home to quality educational resources, such as the University of South Carolina Aiken, Limestone College, Aiken Technical College, and Christ Central Institute. Aiken County School District is in the top 10% of schools in South Carolina regarding improvement as it successfully endeavors to make education a priority.

Homes in Aiken County range from ranch, traditional, and colonial styles priced in the low $100s to the larger luxury homes, with some worth over $3 million. The median sale price for homes here is $121,900. Your next home could be waiting for you here in beautiful Aiken, SC.
